A Charge to Charleston Southern University Watch my full remarks here. It was a privilege to start this week by delivering the “charge to the president” at the inauguration of the new Charleston Southern University President Dr. Keith Faulkner. I graduated from CSU in 1988, and was honored to be back encouraging a new generation of leaders and celebrating the truth that all things are possible. Charleston Southern University has prepared countless young people for life’s challenges, opportunities, and triumphs, and I pray God continues to bless its mission to be a beacon of light for our state. As Women’s History Month comes to a close, I spent this week honoring the women who have helped set my path, highlighting barrier breaking women from South Carolina, and discussing how we can continue empowering female leaders to shape our nation’s future. I was also proud to celebrate four Senate colleagues — Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) — who are paving the way for women to achieve their dreams. Whether it’s my grandmother and my mother, or my Senate colleagues and trailblazing South Carolinian women like Mary McLeod Bethune, it is time to celebrate the women who teach us that all things are possible. Standing With Israel Earlier this month, the Senate’s top Democrat gave an unprecedented speech on the Senate floor where he called for elections to be held in Israel. The speech came as progressives continue their calls on our greatest ally in the Middle East to back down from its fight against Hamas. The United States must stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Israel, not undermine the right to defend itself from brutal terrorists. That’s why I introduced a resolution supporting Israel’s right to self-defense and condemning interference in its sovereign electoral process. We must show the world that we will always stand with Israel as it seeks to confront and eradicate the threat of terrorism. Read more about my resolution here. Sending a Message to the President Last month, nearly 200,000 illegal immigrants crossed the open border and at least 10 million individuals have illegally crossed into the U.S. since President Biden took office. This president’s open border policies have allowed for the largest border invasion in American history, provided a safe harbor for people who violate our nation’s laws, and put American lives and our national security at risk. This week, I joined my Senate colleagues in introducing a resolution denouncing the Biden administration’s open border policies. We cannot have a secure border and a safe America with a president who refuses to enforce the laws on the books. Read more about our resolution here. |
