Red Rocks is one of the Seven Wonders of Colorado. Actually, it was once listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the World! Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains just west of Denver lies a natural amphitheater every rock star wants to perform at, so why not stage A Prairie Home Companion's American Revival from the Red Rocks stage. Garrison Keillor will be joined by The Royal Academy of Radio Actors featuring Sue Scott, Tim Russell and Fred Newman plus the Guy's All Star Shoe Band led by Richard Dworsky performing with Pat Donohue, Stuart Duncan and Gary Raynor plus special guest performers including country superstar Brad Paisley, Southern bluesman Elvin Bishop and his Big Fun Trio, Opera star Ellie Dehn, and vocalist Heather Masse.
Garrison says, "We’ve heard enough about despair, let’s take a night in the Colorado mountains to have a big time with Brad Paisley, Elvin Bishop, Ellie Dehn, the Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band, Heather Masse, and the Host Himself who is very happy to be turning 80.” It's time to get together again with friends and rejoice in a bit of comedy, stories and song! What you won't read in the paper, except now I was born in 1942, a year that hasn’t been recent for a long time and now I’m strolling toward 80, an age when I can stop feeling bad that I never finished reading Moby-Dick. I got to page 20 and Melville hadn’t even gotten them on the boat yet. At 80 I put the idea of self-improvement behind me once and for all. I have considered cosmetic surgery, a muscle implant around my mouth so that I can grin, but once you start corrective surgery, you may go on to have a chest lift or butt reduction and your belly button winds up in your armpit and your butt comes out lopsided so you’ll need to wear orthopedic pants. This week on A Prairie Home Companion Lately, we’ve been feeling some nostalgia for the days when we traveled Minnesota in a borrowed Winnebago with Tom Keith at the wheel, 12 quarts of chili and beans on the stove, and a pile of guitars and drums strapped to the roof. So this week we’re motoring up to Glenwood, Minnesota, to do a show, just like we used to, at the Lakeside Ballroom. Featuring Prairie Home old-timers: Butch Thompson, Peter Ostroushko, Adam Granger, and Prudence Johnson, as well as the Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band, the Royal Academy of Radio Acting, and the News from Lake Wobegon. For 12 years of his multi-decade career, Butch Thompson was the house pianist on A Prairie Home Companion, dating back to the show’s second broadcast in July 1974. As a soloist, he earned a worldwide reputation as a master of ragtime, stride, and classic jazz piano. Described by Jazz Journal International as “the premier player in traditional jazz today,” Butch also performed with his well-known trio, his eight-piece New Orleans Jazz Originals, and with symphony orchestras, including the Hartford Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Cairo (Egypt) Symphony. “The Pearls” >>>Available music >>>
Adam Granger is a flatpicking guitar wiz. He has written about that style, given lessons, and played countless tunes since he taught himself to play some 60 years ago. In 1974, he moved from his native Oklahoma to Minnesota, where he became a charter member of the Powdermilk Biscuit Band, A Prairie Home Companion’s first house band. Following his APHC stint, he played for eight years in The Eclectic Brothers, an acoustic swing trio, then returned to solo work. “Perfection and Rehearsal” >>>
For mandolinist Peter Ostroushko, the die was cast early on. Growing up in the Ukrainian community of northeast Minneapolis, Peter heard mandolin, balalaika, and bandura tunes played by his father and family friends at get-togethers in their home and in church. It’s the music that continued to echo in Peter’s memory and provided the basis for many of his compositions. He played with everyone under the sun, from the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra to the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, from Bob Dylan to Chet Atkins, and he released a stack of his own CDs. He spent more than 40 years as a frequent performer on A Prairie Home Companion, and for a few seasons was Music Director for the show. Prudence Johnson’s career in music has taken her from stage (honky-tonks to Carnegie Hall) to silver screen (Robert Redford’s A River Runs Through It). As one music critic put it, “[There’s] not a genre she hasn’t interpreted with her ducky, sensual alto voice and terminally good taste.”
