A Walk in the park on a historic day

Saturday morning, walking around south Minneapolis, a neighborhood where, back in my youth, when your elders start neglecting their lawn, you might move them out of the bungalow and plant them here in a one-BR apt. until they can no longer climb stairs and then there’d be a family meeting — shoot them? Or plunk them in the nursing home? — and off to Happy Acres they go, worn out since elliptical machines didn’t exist back then and there were no trainers except animal trainers...

This week on A Prairie Home Companion

Your foot will be tapping along and you might find yourself trying to keep from singing as we travel back to 2013 for a classic show featuring acoustic groove masters Väsen, minimal Motown singers (and drummer) Chic Gamine, and mandolin wizard Chris Thile, plus The Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band, The Royal Academy of Radio Actors, and the latest News from Lake Wobegon … honey, could you ask for more?

Highlights include Chris Thile joining Richard Dworsky on “Ridin’ the River Home” as Richard’s solo project, All in Due Time, is featured on the show; Chris pokes fun at himself in script form and then dazzles on the mandolin on Presto from Sonata No. 1 in g minor; “Paper Moon” and “All Night” from Chic Gamine; “Flippen” and “Pulska for Tom Morrow” from Väsen; plus visits from Guy Noir and Dusty and Lefty and some of the last Rhubarb of the season. All in all, it’s a pretty good show and we hope you join us for a listen. The link is posted on Saturdays at 5 p.m. CT each week on our Facebook page.

Since forming in 1989 years ago, Väsen has become Sweden’s leading acoustic trio, spreading their exciting brand of instrumental tunes to far-flung corners of the globe. As one reviewer quipped, “This music could be the most significant Swedish export since the Vikings.” With Olov Johansson on nyckelharpa, Mikael Marin on viola, and Roger Tallroth on guitar, the group released their 15th album, Mindset, in 2013 on the NorthSide label. More recent recordings include 2019’s Rule of 3.

Chris Thile made his first appearance on A Prairie Home Companion in 1996. He was 15 and had already been playing mandolin for a decade. He’d also started Nickel Creek with Sara and Sean Watkins. This Grammy winner and MacArthur “genius” grant recipient now leads Punch Brothers, an acoustic quintet whose recordings include 2012’s Ahoy! and Who’s Feeling Young Now? Thile’s newest releases are a collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma and the Goat Rodeo crew on “Not Our First Goat Rodeo” and a solo project, “Laysongs.’

More About All in Due Time from Richard Dworsky

All in Due Time is a collection of my stylistically diverse original compositions, recorded in collaboration with some of my amazingly gifted friends.
“For my Bluegrass piano piece ‘Ridin’ the River Home,’ I recruited Nashville legends Stuart Duncan and Jerry Douglas. ‘High Altitude Blues’ features the harmonica wizard Howard Levy. ‘Dr. Wang’ (a tribute to my acupuncturist/herbalist in NYC) sounds like hot 1920s jazz and features some of the best trad-jazz players around. ‘Goin’ to the Dance With You’ has been previously recorded by the great Kristin Chenoweth, but my ‘composer’s version’ here is sung by the fabulous Tony DeSare. My amazing little sister, Sally Dworsky, sings a sweet version of ‘All The Joys,’ which I wrote for her adorable daughter, Lila. And my dear old friend, the stellar Al Jarreau, sings a lovely version of my setting of Emily Dickinson’s ‘I Shall Not Live in Vain.’

“‘The T.K. Reel’ is a tribute to A Prairie Home Companion’s late great sound man, Tom Keith, and features the show’s fiddler/mandolinist, Richard Kriehn. A couple of evocative semi-classical ballads feature cellist Anthony Ross and trumpeter Charles Lazarus from the Minnesota Orchestra. And, of course, there are a few solo piano tunes too. Many of these pieces were first heard on A Prairie Home Companion and I feel so fortunate to revisit them here along with such wonderful friends.” —Richard Dworsky

Richard Dworsky draws from his richly diverse musical experience and uniquely eclectic compositional style to breathe life into a collection of original songs, most heard first on A Prairie Home Companion. For the album, Rich is joined by many friends including Stuart Duncan, Jerry Douglas, Tony DeSare, Andy Stein, Arnie Kinsella, Richard Kriehn, Gary Raynor, Howard Levy, Dean Magraw, Sally Dworsky, and Al Jarreau, among others. The original compositions include two songs, “Cádiz Calls” and “Ricordi d’estate,” that were inspired by A Prairie Home Companion cruises. Other tracks include “Ridin’ the River Home” and “The T.K. Reel,” plus 10 others.
