Big tech seeking AI deals with major Hollywood studios

Potential pacts could be similar to those inked with publishers to train AI models on content

Major players in big tech are holding talks with Hollywood studios regarding the licensing of content to help improve their AI video-generation tools, Bloomberg reported.

Google owner Alphabet, Microsoft-backed OpenAI, and Meta are developing powerful AI tools that can create realistic scenes from a text prompt, but they need content to train and improve the AI models that produce the material. The tech giants have reportedly offered “tens of millions of dollars to partner with studios in some capacity,” though it’s not clear if any agreements have been reached.

The talks reflect similar deals between AI firms and publishers regarding content to train AI models and are aimed at avoiding possible copyright claims ...

Daylight's intriguing DC1 device 'doesn't scream for attention'

Android product is a curious blend of tablet and e-reader

The Daylight DC1 is an Android tablet with a 10.5-inch LivePaper, 60Hz to 120Hz display that makes it as smooth and responsive as any top-tier tablet, except with an e-ink screen like a Kindle, Digital Trends reported.

It comes with 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage that’s expandable via the microSD card slot. Daylight seems to be pitching it as a device that doesn’t demand your attention in the way that a bells-and-whistles tablet might, yet you can still do plenty on it, such as browsing and productivity tasks.

The DC1 costs $729 and is available until the current batch sells out. After that, a preordered device should ship in early 2025 ...

Hands-on with the 'extravagantly large' TCL X955 115 Max TV

At 115 inches, this television is a real whopper

At 115 inches, TCL’s X955 115 Max TV is certainly massive, but “it's not until you stand face-to-face with this TV that you realize quite how imposing it is,” What Hi-Fi said at the start of its review.

This is a 4K QD-Mini LED TV with an impressive 20,736 individual dimming zones. It can also reach 5000 nits of brightness and supports HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and HLG. HDMI 2.1 allows for gaming at 4K/120Hz, while the speaker system includes dual subwoofers, quad side-firing speakers, and dual front-firing speakers.

It handles black depths “very well” and offers a picture that’s “impressively sharp and clear” ...

Report: OpenAI didn’t copy Scarlett Johansson’s voice for ChatGPT

It's too early to say if the Washington Post's report will bring a close to the matter

Scarlett Johansson recently alleged that OpenAI had used her voice — without her permission — to create an improved AI voice for its ChatGPT chatbot that featured heavily during a special event held by the tech firm earlier this week.

But the Washington Post reported on Thursday that documents shared by OpenAI, as well as interviews with those working on the technology, suggest that while the voice may sound like Johansson’s, it was actually based on that of another actor who gave her permission to use it.

According to the Post, the natural voice of the hired actor sounds identical to the AI-generated voice used by OpenAI for ChatGPT ...

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2’s new trailer shows off co-op chaos

The game is available for preorder ahead of its September 9 release date, with four editions up for sale

Warhammer fans will indeed get to battle against each other again in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, Digital Trends reported.

The update comes via a new trailer released during the 2024 Warhammer Skulls event on Thursday.

“We’ve known that the game, developed by Saber Interactive, would feature co-op for the single-player campaign, but we now know that it’ll have more co-op modes, including a 6v6 PVP mode called ‘Eternal War,’” the report said, adding that this is “good news for fans of the original Space Marine game from 2011, which featured a beloved PVP mode” ...
