Click here Dear friend, This morning in a 5-4 ruling, the Supreme Court struck down a Louisiana law that sought to protect women from the well-documented dangerous practices of the abortion industry. The court's ruling in June Medical Services LLC v. Russo is disappointing and wrong-headed. It is unconscionable to allow the abortion industry to keep maximizing profits at the expense of the health of their patients. In order to understand how this decision will affect women, watch this interview with Cindy, a Louisiana woman who sought an abortion at age 19. ERLC Policy Director Chelsea Patterson Sobolik interviewed Cindy in front of the Supreme Court on the day of oral arguments in March. Cindy experienced severe complications from a botched procedure and wasn’t given proper medical care at the abortion facility. Cindy's powerful story shows just how dangerous the abortion lobby is for women's health. The ERLC filed an amicus brief in this case on January 2 urging the justices to protect women from unsafe and dangerous abortion clinics. We argued the "undue burden" test is the incorrect standard for laws that regulate abortion doctors and that Louisiana’s Unsafe Abortion Protection Act is “a valid exercise of Louisiana's authority to enact reasonable health-and-safety measures.” While today's decision is wrong and disappointing, our work to uphold the dignity of the unborn and disrupt the predatory practices of the abortion industry moves forward. We will not grow weary in our ministry to the vulnerable. The ERLC will continue to defend the human dignity of the unborn and vulnerable communities in the U.S. Congress and legislatures around the country as we work to expose and disrupt the predatory and unsafe practices of the abortion industry. We will also continue to defend these kinds of legitimate laws in court.
