“Squirrels!” He whined at the back door, waiting for me to let him loose. He was desperate to go after those squirrels at the bird feeder. “Go get ’em!” I said, swinging the door open, knowing there was no chance he would ever catch one. With all his pent-up energy, my three-year-old mutt Bucky was faster than me, his speed and agility no match for my sprint to the big bay window to watch him running and jumping in circles at the base of the bird-feeder pole.

I wondered if the squirrels egged him on through the window each day when I was at work. I had never seen such determination for such a fruitless endeavor day after day.

My dogs loved it when I was home. We spent as much time outdoors as we could, going for walks and exploring the woods and fields around our house. We lived on a dead-end dirt road at the edge of the airport and visitors were almost nonexistent. (Keep reading)
