A frantic phone call. A high-speed chase. Another death.

Deaths from high-speed police chases, especially those involving innocent by-standers, have been particularly painful in the Baton Rouge region.

The latest involves a fatal chase that started outside of Plaquemine and ended in Port Allen.

Staff writers Patrick Sloan-Turner and Gabby Jimenez examine the issue and what happened Saturday night.


Imagine hopping a train from Baton Rouge to New Orleans. No commuting headaches. No airport parking fees. That's the hope, anyway. Thanks to the $1.3 billion terminal project, passenger levels at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport are bouncing back from the lows of the pandemic.

Officials are now eyeing a light-rail system between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Of course, that's many years away. In the meantime, the airport has begun work on a five-mile road that will be the foundation for the rail link.
