Our friends at Perma-Bound Books and Penguin Random House Education are hosting a FREE webinar, "How to Use Graphic Novels in the Classroom," for educators interested in bringing graphic novels into their classrooms...and TOON's beloved Kevin McCloskey will be there! |
On Monday, April 24th, from 2:30-3:30 PM EST, Eric Hand, a teacher and literary consultant, will moderate an educator-focused panel about featuring graphic novels in the classroom. Hand is also one of the authors of the groundbreaking new textbook from the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, Graphic Novels: Writing in Pictures and Words. (You might remember how excited we were about that book from our last newsletter!) Hand will oversee the discussion between celebrated cartoonists Shing Yin Khor (The Legend of Auntie Po), Chad Sell (The Cardboard Kingdom series), and TOON's very own Kevin McCloskey (his upcoming Caterpillars: What Will I Be When I Get To Be Me? will be under discussion!) The panel comes at a time when when graphic novels are becoming an increasingly popular education tool in classrooms. We at TOON couldn't be more excited since this has been part of our mission from the beginning! If you're an educator interested in the panel, you can register here for this free webinar! |

And the award goes to . . . |
TOON's R. Kikuo Johnson (The Shark King) has been selected as a winner of the prestigious Whiting Award! |
The Whiting Award is given annually to ten emerging writers in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama, and includes a prize of $50,000. The award is based on "early accomplishment and the promise of great work to come." According to the Whiting Foundation website: "We hope to identify exceptional new writers who have yet to make their mark in the literary culture. Though the writers may not necessarily be young (talent may emerge at any age), the grant ideally offers recipients a first opportunity to devote themselves fully to writing, and the recognition has a significant impact. Whiting winners have gone on to win numerous prestigious awards and fellowships, including the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Obie Award, and MacArthur, Guggenheim, and Lannan fellowships, and their work has shaped and advanced literature in this country over the past three decades." |
R. Kikuo Johnson is the FIRST cartoonist to win the award! To celebrate, he was joined by his mom and dad, who flew all the way in from Maui to attend the ceremony! When we spoke with him to say congratulations, he shared the photo above with us and said that he was "completely shocked." We here at TOON weren't though—if you've ever read his TOON Book, The Shark King, you already know what an amazing cartoonist he is. And if you haven't? There's no time like the present! |
Have a great week, and we'll be back in your inbox with more TOON news before you know it! |
