Friend,
I’m writing with great news: This morning the Senate Commerce Committee advanced the nominations of Alvaro Bedoya and Gigi Sohn to respectively fill the tie-breaking commissioner spots at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC)!
The fight to get them here has been long and hard. As recently as last night we weren’t sure if the Republicans on the committee would bother to show up this morning to allow a vote on these consumer-protection champions. I’ll spare you the boring Senate procedural details, but if they hadn’t shown up, votes on these nominees would have been delayed even further.
Over the last week, our team has been working double time to make sure that didn’t happen. And we couldn’t have done it without you.
Gigi Sohn, who will be the first open member of the LGBTQIA+ community to serve as an FCC commissioner, has faced a coordinated right-wing smear campaign since she was nominated. She was forced to go through an unnecessary second confirmation hearing last month. And during that hearing, Sen. Ed Markey noted that the tremendous amount of activism in support of Sohn is unlike anything he’s ever seen for an FCC nominee.
He was talking about you.
We’ve waited over a year for a fully functional FTC and FCC. We can’t let cynical political maneuvers from obstructionist lawmakers and industry-aligned hacks further delay Bedoya and Sohn’s ability to serve people everywhere. There’s so much important work ahead, and having both of these commissioners in place is essential to getting it all done.
This fight isn’t over. Bedoya and Sohn both have more votes to clear on the Senate floor before they can get to work. Could you donate $10 to help us ensure the Senate confirms them ASAP?
Thanks for all that you do—
