Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Chris Cuomo and Friends

Election Day and its aftermath has brought a surge of traffic for many media outlets, and CNN has seen its numbers surge more than many. The network is on track to continue its hot streak this week, as it pulled off the remarkable feat of winning the 25-54 demo in prime time on Tuesday night.

Cuomo Prime Time, hosted by Chris Cuomo, was the big winner in the demo, pulling in 710,000 A25 – 54 viewers during the 9:00 pm hour.

Cuomo easily topped his major cable competitors in the demo, with Sean Hannity's Hannity getting 635,000 viewers and a Rachel Maddow-less The Rachel Maddow Show pulling in 527,000. (Maddow has had fill-in guests on her show for the past two weeks as she quarantines at home after a Covid-19 exposure.)

Fox News still had bright spots: Tucker Carlson Tonight was the top show on cable news, and Hannity beat Cuomo in total viewers.

Cuomo and Don Lemon habitually spend a few minutes between their two shows on a split screen, briefly chatting about the day's stories and sharing a few jokes. The two colleagues have plenty of reason to smile this week, with Lemon's CNN Tonight with Don Lemon also claiming a prime time victory, with its 561,000 A25 – 54 audience topping The Ingraham Angle's 555,000 and Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell's 436,000.

Another CNN host, Anderson Cooper, also had a strong Tuesday, pulling in 715,000 in the demo, a number that made Anderson Cooper 360 CNN's top demo performer, even though he fell slightly short of Tucker Carlson, who got 745,000 A25 – 54 viewers.

All in all, a great night for Cuomo, and a good night for his friends too.

MEDIA LOSER:
Jenna Ellis

President Donald Trump’s senior legal adviser and campaign lawyer Jenna Ellis‘ has made a brand for herself as one of the president’s most vocal propagandists.

But just a few years ago, Ellis was absolutely excoriating then-candidate Trump, according to a new report by CNN’s KFile. She called him an “unethical, corrupt, lying, criminal, dirtbag” and criticized his supporters for making “ridiculously illogical, inconsistent, and blatantly stupid arguments supporting Trump," plus many, many more sharp critiques.

Ellis' response to CNN about her old comments really takes the cake, telling them that it was “no secret” that she hadn’t supported Trump during the 2016 primary process but was “glad to have learned that I was completely wrong about Trump back then” and had changed her mind after getting to know him.

“President Trump is a sincere Christian, the best president in modern history, and made and kept his promises to the American people,” said Ellis, a comment that Mediaite's Sarah Rumpf found reminiscent of The Manchurian Candidate.

With a quarter of a million Americans dead from Covid-19, and cases surging to horrific record levels -- not to mention the White House's recalcitrant refusal to cooperate with President-elect Joe Biden's transition team -- Ellis should expect pushback for such comments.

Her aggressive promotion of Trump's baseless voter fraud claims -- which continued apace at Thursday's insane press conference alongside Rudy Giuliani -- isn't changing the election results and only serves to erode her own credibility.

The A-Block

JUST IN: Giuliani Goo

Rudy Giuliani is going viral for all the wrong reasons, holding a press conference with Jenna Ellis where he made a series of bizarre and unfounded allegations, reenacted a scene from My Cousin Vinny, and then seemed to be melting on live television, with some unknown "ominous black goo" sliding down his face.

Who's staying in the basement now?

President Trump has been on a tear keeping Twitter's monitors busy as they apply warning labels to many of his tweets making baseless voter fraud claims. But the White House press pool has been stuck twiddling their thumbs as day after day has gone by with no public events for the president.

Over the past 16 days, there have been 12 where Trump had no public events, and even the days where he did have something scheduled, it was usually just one event and he hasn't taken questions from reporters.

CNN’s John Berman criticized the nearly empty White House schedules, pointing out how Trump likes to call himself “a wartime president,” but that he’s actually “a tee-time president.”

Berman's colleague Kaitlan Collins had a similar observation, that Trump was “much more consumed” about his election fight than the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Something is rotten in the state of Michigan

There's a real mess in Michigan, with Monica Palmer and William Hartmann, the two Republican members of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers, originally refusing to certify the results of the election, then after intense public backlash, reversing themselves and voting to certify.

Now, the flip-flop has been flipped again. On Thursday, Palmer and Hartmann said they wanted to rescind their votes to certify.

Also, Trump himself reportedly called the pair before they said they were opposed to certification once again.

Doggone it

South Australia Police got some international growls when they posted a tweet replying to a concerned resident, declaring that leaving the house to walk your dog was forbidden under the latest pandemic restrictions. Read all about the boneheaded policy and the some of the best Twitter reactions here.

Truly sick

Company managers for Tyson Foods are facing a wrongful death lawsuit that claims they took bets on how many of their employees would end up catching the coronavirus. Meatpacking plants across the country faced serious outbreaks as the pandemic spread, but the heartlessness of this particular allegation stands out.

AOC + GOP? LOL

Fox News' Laura Ingraham had an unusual idea on her show Wednesday: suggesting that Republicans should try to find ways to work with progressive Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Yes, really.

Tucker Tops CNN Champs

CNN won every hour of cable news from 9:00 a.m. to Midnight on Tuesday except one, as the network swept to victories in both total day and primetime in the coveted 25 – 54 age demographic. But Tucker Carlson Tonight broke that network's day-long stranglehold to claim victory in both its 8:00 p.m. timeslot as well as all of cable news.

All peachy in Georgia

“We have not seen any widespread voter fraud,” said Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, discounting allegations of fraud in Georgia’s election ahead of the state’s anticipated Thursday report of a hand tally in the presidential race. Raffensperger also said that he expected Biden to retain his victory in the state.

Turkey troubles

The CDC is recommending against traveling for Thanksgiving this year, as Covid-19 cases continue surging to record levels, and the death toll passed the quarter-million mark.

“Postponing travel and staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others this year," the recommendation says, advising that for those that do gather in person, holding gatherings outside and having each person wear masks and bring their “own food, drinks, plates, cups, and utensils" can help.

Must See Clip

"America at its best"

Not everything on the internet is bad, and one of our favorite examples of that is Tim and Fred Williams, the "YouTube Twins" who have gone viral for their wholesome videos reacting to listening to classic songs from a variety of genres. The 22-year-old twin brothers have a genuine enthusiasm for all types of music, and their joy is just plain fun to watch.

Their latest video started with the twins reviewing Bob Dylan's The Times They Are a-Changin', one of the songs from the playlist former President Barack Obama released with his new memoir, A Promised Land. They nod their heads along to Dylan's guitar chords that open the song -- "smooth, just smooth" they comment approvingly -- and then were interrupted by a surprise guest: Obama himself.

It's a fun and heartwarming chat between the former president and the Williams brothers. If you need a smile today, this is a must-watch.
