How an Agency's Algorithm Helped Turn Popular Music Into Speech-Therapy Playlists

Algorithms are a bit like plumbing. You generally only notice them when they're not working well.

But I've warmed to them as social networks have gotten a lot better over the years about making your newsfeeds algorithmic without being overly odd. (That said, I wish LinkedIn would go easy on the posts from a week ago, but I digress.)

Today, however, we learned about a new way of using algorithms–with the benefit going beyond just seeing the best gym selfies your friends have to offer.

Irish agency Rothco created an algorithm that could scan music to find traits that make songs beneficial for speech therapy. These tracks were then compiled into playlists called "Saylists."

The project was inspired by the fact that certain kinds of music help kids practice word sounds in a way that's repetitive without getting monotonous.

The project evolved into a Warner Music partnership that will be made available to Apple Music subscribers.

What other interesting audio projects have you seen agencies and brands pursuing lately? Let me know at the email below or at @Griner on Twitter.
