Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Dana Bash

"That was a sh*t show."

The above quote is from CNN's Dana Bash, speaking for pretty much all of America last night after what was nearly unanimously viewed as the wildest, weirdest, and worst presidential debate in televised history.

President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden spent virtually every minute on stage Tuesday evening interrupting and talking over each other, as moderator Chris Wallace desperately attempted to maintain some semblance of control.

Bash's colleague Wolf Blitzer kicked off CNN's post-debate commentary by calling the debate the "most chaotic" he or America had ever seen.

Jake Tapper agreed, calling it “a hot mess inside a dumpster fire inside of a train wreck," "the worst debate I have ever seen," and "a disgrace."

But it was Bash who had the descriptive phrase that perfectly summed up the evening.

“That is really the phrase I’m getting from people on both sides of the aisle on text and it’s the only phrase I can think of to describe it,” Bash explained.

She also said that the people who were "hurt the most" by the disastrous debate were the undecided voters who got a "bad reality show" instead of any substantive discussion of the issues.

Watch, and nod along in depressed solidarity with Bash, here.

MEDIA LOSER:
The Commission on Presidential Debates, Undecided Voters, and Basically All of America

Criticism of the chaotic and combative debate has been pouring in from both sides of the aisle with lots of ire focused on moderator Chris Wallace -- but as Mediaite's Colby Hall argued today, there's only so much a moderator constrained by the limited structure provided by the Commission on Presidential Debates can do.

In fact, the criticism grew so quickly and loudly that the CPD responded Wednesday, issuing a statement that "additional structure should be added to the format of the remaining debates to ensure a more orderly discussion of the issues," and that they would be announcing these "additional tools" shortly.

Still, any changes to the debate formats will have to be approved by both campaigns, no easy task at any time, and even less so considering the heightened tensions as the November 3 election looms ever closer.

The diehard partisan supporters of both candidates made up their minds long ago, and the fate of the election likely belongs to the undecided voters. But what did last night offer them as they seek to make their decisions? Policy discussions were few and far between, and often obscured by crosstalk, interruptions, and insults.

Every recent election has been described as the "most important in our lifetimes!" -- a phrase that often sounds a bit histrionic -- but it is an important decision, and last night America lost out on an opportunity to hear from these candidates.

The A-Block

GRUMPY OLD MEN

Tuesday night's septuagenarian slap fight was, as we noted above, widely viewed as the "worst" and "most chaotic" debate in modern American history, a veritable "sh** show" as Bash and others said.

For all continuing coverage, find all our debate news and video in one place, here. More highlights below...

"Stand Back and Stand By"

Lots of the media coverage is focusing on this moment, where Trump was asked to condemn white supremacists and specifically asked about the Proud Boys.

Trump's comments that they should "stand back and stand by" were quickly slammed by his critics -- and cheered by the Proud Boys themselves

Rick Santorum might have been a little too honest in describing Trump's remarks as him not wanting to say anything bad about people who support him

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) said that maybe Trump "misspoke," but did say that he needed to correct it.

Trump did attempt to clarify in comments to reporters today, including the bizarre claim that he didn't know who the Proud Boys were.

As for the Proud Boys, they're now selling t-shirts with their new motto.

Which son?

Another moment getting a lot of attention was when Biden brought up his son Beau Biden, who passed away from brain cancer, and Trump interrupted to attack Biden's other son, Hunter Biden

Fox fawns

Predictably, Trump's debate performance had numerous defenders on Fox News -- including some who went so far as to slam their colleague's moderation of the debate.

Yeah that didn't work

The Commission on Presidential Debates basically tossed up their hands and admitted defeat today, acknowledging what a mess the debate was and promising some new "additional structure" to be applied to the upcoming debates.

Biden not bailing

Media talking heads on multiple channels openly pondered whether the upcoming debates should be cancelled -- but the Biden campaign was quick to swat that suggestion down. Vice Presidential nominee Kamala Harris was adamant they wanted to take every opportunity to speak to the American people.

10-Point Lead

A new poll of Pennsylvania voters shows Democratic presidential nominee Biden with a 10 point lead over President Trump on the eve of the first debate.

"Cease and Desist"

Trump's comments to the Proud Boys from last night's debate are getting a lot of press -- as well as the group's response -- so it wasn't a surprise that reporters asked Biden what message he wanted to send to the Proud Boys and other white supremacist groups during his "train stop" speeches through Ohio today.

“My message to the Proud Boys and every other white supremacist group is cease and desist. That’s not who we are, this is not who we are as Americans,” said Biden. He also had a message for American voters.
