A Prairie Home Companion American Revival It's time to join again in song for two more American Revival performances. We had so much fun in Denver and Nashville that we are bringing the crew together for a few more shows. This time, we are visiting Washington, D.C., and then on to The Town Hall in New York City. These are two great cities for some sightseeing as well as a visit with some old friends. There’ll be humor, music, no end of fun, and, of course, all the latest News from Lake Wobegon. The Washington, D.C., show at The Anthem will feature two-term U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins, acclaimed soprano Ellie Dehn, vocalist Heather Masse, Broadway conductor and pianist Rob Fisher, and The Friendly String Quartet. As usual, actors Tim Russell and Fred Newman will be on hand, along with keyboardist Richard Dworsky, guitarist Pat Donohue, and more. At The Town Hall, featured performers include Tony Award-winning director Walter Bobbie, Broadway conductor Rob Fisher and the Demitasse Orchestra, vocalists Christine DiGiallonardo and Heather Masse, keyboardist Richard Dworsky, actors Tim Russell and Sue Scott, and sound-effects ace Fred Newman. Listening to the lonesome whistle blow I am in the process of packing up and leaving Minnesota where I’ve lived for most of eighty years, which seems dramatic but isn’t since most of my classmates left long ago and Bob Dylan, who overlapped with me at the University of Minnesota, heard the lonesome whistle blow and matriculated his way to New York and if Bob ever wrote a song about hating to leave home, I’m not aware of it. The itinerant life was what he was all about. I am fond of Minnesota, the home of Hazelden and the recovery industry and America’s front line of defense against the flood of illegals from Canada, which has led to the boom in hockey, the season now extending into summer. It’s the home of Robert Bly, author of Iron John, which was big back when there was a men’s movement but it disappeared due to gender fluidity when masculinity liquified and men were no longer required to be solid granite. I tried to be Agnes for a while but it was too late, I was in my late sixties, stoicism was baked into me, voice-raising drugs had no effect, my eyebrows are bushy, and I hate hockey, which real Minnesota women are very good at. Listen to the show >>> Follow our Facebook page >>> More information about our featured guests: When singer-actress Christine DiGiallonardo and her two older sisters were kids in Brooklyn, they loved stacking up three-part harmonies and entertaining family and friends. They even put on elaborate backyard shows and charged the neighbors admission. Today, Christine’s credits include Two Gentlemen of Verona (Shakespeare in the Park Festival), My Fair Lady (Lincoln Center), and Monica! The Musical (New York Musical Theatre Festival). “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” >>> Joe Ely left West Texas as a teenager and “followed Woody Guthrie west and the blues guys down south; was on the West Coast during all the big hippie days.” After living in Europe for a while, he returned to Texas. “I always knew the best musicians were in Lubbock,” he says. Listen to “The Road Goes on Forever” >>> Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano were each pursuing separate music careers when they met in Nashville in 2001 and started their duo four years later, calling themselves Johnnyswim. (The name comes from a scene in the movie Jaws where a guy named Johnny is trying to escape the shark.) They also married. The couple’s latest recording is 2022’s Johnnyswim. Ryman Show Shirt Thanks to everyone who joined us in person, online, or in spirit for the most recent broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion American Revival at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. Garrison went to Nashville in 1974 to write an article on the Grand Ole Opry’s final Ryman performance before the program moved to Opryland. He came home to Minnesota with the idea for A Prairie Home Companion. So, it was fitting that the show returned there for the Ryman’s 130th Anniversary. Shirts are dated and available in size S–XXL.
