Good evening

Most of us remember that nail-biting feeling of waiting for exam results as a child or young adult. It’s a rite of passage and an important milestone in life.

This year is particularly important - not because one student has done better than another or, indeed, one school - though all deserve congratulations.

What it represents is achievement in the face of adversity, of flying in the face of a worldwide pandemic that took away everything we took for granted in our physical schools and in education.

These students are not lucky because they didn’t rely on traditional exams - they are remarkable because they are progressing in life despite them and to undermine that is to belittle the achievements of an entire generation who deserve more.

It won’t be easy as competition for university places will this year be higher than ever and there is still uncertainty regarding a virus that has not yet gone away.

This remarkable school year is walking into a future that we could not have foreseen two years ago, yet continues to excel.

Congratulations, one and all.

For all our A-level coverage please check out our live blog and there will be a special eight page supplement in tomorrow's newspaper.

Regards, Nicola
