A live band played 2 copyrighted songs at Prejean's. Now the restaurant is being sued.

by Adam Daigle | Acadiana business editor

Happy Friday, Acadiana business news readers. Let's get down to the business news of the day with the Mardi Gras break finally here.

This odd story came Thursday afternoon: because a live act played two copyrighted songs — two Christmas songs, each released before 1950 — and the owners of Prejean's have not paid a licensing fee, the longtime Acadiana restaurant is subject of a federal suit seeking statutory damages.

ASCAP, which represents nearly 900,000 artists and musicians, said their requests for payment for a licensing fee have been ignored. Tim Metcalf, one of the owners of Prejean's, says the group has asked for $3,500 a month for a license.

Have a great day.
