Good morning and welcome to 2022! We've got lots of news this New Year's weekend. Here's a rundown. 

Year in review

In this retrospective, we look back at some of the defining stories of 2021, which Metro Editor Kelly Kissel notes ended much as it began: in the throes of two pandemics. Another COVID surge carried us into the New Year, while record gun violence in Baton Rouge continued unabated.

LSU's new COVID rules

Louisiana's flagship university issued its pandemic protocol for the coming semester. While the guidelines are pretty similar to the ones last fall, there are a couple notable updates. 

Lobbyist arrested

A well-known Baton Rouge lobbyist and former president of the Baton Rouge Bar Association was arrested after he hit a woman in the face and beat up her son, according to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office told us. Here's what officials told us about what happened.
