Teacher Kellen Blankenship |
Hi there! My name is Kellen Blankenship and I teach 4th grade reading and writing down in Austin, Texas. This last year I was able to use Comics: Easy as ABC to create an online unit to use with students during distance learning. THEY LOVED IT! Comics are a fun and engaging medium that can be used to dive deep into a lot of ideas in order to better understand the reading and writing process. With all of this down time in the summer, this is a great chance to spark a new interest and engage your child through comics. |

Tips to explore when you read: |
|
- Make Predictions - Based on the cover and flipping through the book, ask what do you think the book will be about? Why do you think that? This helps to activate thinking and prepare them for the story.
- Character traits - How would you describe the character's personality? How are they likely to react as a result?
- Plot - Can you identify the problem and solution? Can you summarize the story in a few sentences?
- Author's Craft - Why do you think the author drew the picture this way? Used this style of dialogue balloon? How does the shape/size of the box affect the story? Studying the art as well as the dialogue will help them to understand the thought behind the storytelling.
- Make your own - Comics: Easy as ABC is the perfect book to inspire your budding cartoonist to make their own.
