Dear Friend,

Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina!

This week marked the beginning of a new chapter for our country. On November 5, the American people voted for change. President Trump and Senate Republicans are committed to delivering that change and restoring strength to our country. We now have a president who will put America first and keep the promises he made to the American people!

“For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand. He knows your trudging through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.”

News That You Can Use

FEMA may be able to assist renters and homeowners that have sustained damage or losses due to Hurricane Helene in South Carolina. Although the deadline to apply for federal assistance has been extended to January 28, FEMA strongly urges those to apply as soon as possible. You can apply for assistance online at DisasterAssistance.gov or in person at a Disaster Recovery Center.

A New Era of Leadership

On Monday, I joined millions of Americans and friends around the world in celebration of President Trump’s inauguration! Under his second term, Americans will have renewed pride in our nation and have high enthusiasm for lower taxes, safer communities, and greater opportunity. I look forward to working alongside the President over the next four years to help him deliver these wins for the American people.

Congratulations, President Trump and Vice President Vance! Let’s get to work and once again make America the shining city on the hill!

Marching for Life

Americans from around the country marched in Washington today to advocate for life. More than 55 million Americans will never touch their feet on the soil because of abortion. Thank you to those who are fighting to help ensure every child enjoys the right to life.

Passage of Laken Riley Act

President Biden’s refusal to protect the homeland and secure our southern border cost Laken Riley and other Americans their lives. This isn’t just a policy failure—it’s a failure to prioritize the safety of our citizens. The solution is simple: secure our border, end policies that award illegal immigration, and stop allowing criminals and murderers to enter our country. I want to thank Senators Katie Britt (R-Ala.) and Ted Budd (R-N.C.) for their leadership on this issue and extend my deepest gratitude to Laken’s parents, who have championed this bill, through their grief, to help make sure other innocent Americans won’t be subjected to the cruel fate their daughter suffered. It’s time to put the security of the American people first and restore law and order at our border.

Protecting Parents’ Rights

This week, I introduced the Families’ Rights and Responsibilities Act alongside Senator James Lankford (R-Okla.) and Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.). This legislation would protect parental rights by making sure that parents can decide how best to raise their children without fear of government overreach. Parents have a fundamental right to direct the upbringing, education, and health care of their children. A parent—not the government—knows what is best for her own child. As a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, I will always fight to put parents back in the driver’s seat and ensure they remain the lead decision maker in their child’s life.

Meeting with President Trump’s Nominee to Lead Department of Labor

I found my meeting with Congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer, President Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Labor, to be constructive. President Trump has worked to rebuild the working class and will make sure they have every opportunity to achieve their individual versions of the American Dream. I look forward to continuing to fight for and protect the rights of American workers and promote economic opportunity for all.

Also in Charleston, Femi Oyediran and Miles White of Graft Wine Shop were named semifinalists in the Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service category. Post and Courier: Commentary: SC students lose in fight over education savings accounts

By Tim Scott and Mick Zais

January 23, 2025

We live in a society where we can personalize anything based on our individual needs and preferences, whether it’s the channels we watch, the food we order or the cars we drive. Ironically, there remains so much resistance to parents being able to choose the education that is best-suited to help their children succeed.

No two children are the same. Each child has different interests, talents and needs. So what should we expect from a one-size-fits-all school system where every child learns the same material, on the same schedule, in the same way? Mediocrity, at best — and that’s exactly what we’re getting.

Only 26% of eighth graders are proficient in math, and just 31% are proficient in reading. South Carolina’s eighth graders ranked 39th in math proficiency and 38th in reading proficiency nationwide. Our students deserve better.
