Catching a glimpse of a hummingbird is hard to do, but when you do see one, it feels special.

For whatever reason, seeing a hummingbird out the window brings joy. Maybe it’s because of its brilliant color. Maybe it’s the rapid wing motion that allows it to hover and dart. Maybe it’s because it’s not a common sight, Dennis Romboy writes.

Calliope hummingbirds are the smallest bird native to North America, and they migrate through Utah each year.

If you’re looking to see hummingbirds up close, there’s an event being held at the Red Canyon Lodge in Dutch John, Utah, on July 19.

“It’s a rare and unique opportunity to see Utah’s smallest pollinating birds in hand, while watching biologists gather baseline data to determine strategies for conserving these birds, their habitat and future research needs,” DWR Northeastern Region outreach manager Tonya Kieffer-Selby said.

Gov. Cox tells Utahns to lead a ‘new era of patriotism’ at kickoff celebration for America’s 250th anniversary

Gov. Spencer Cox kicked off a yearlong celebration at the Capitol on Tuesday celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

As part of the celebration, a nationwide initiative called America250, Cox urged Utahns to lead the nation in introducing a “new era of patriotism” in America, Margaret Darby reported.

“It is incumbent on every Utahn to show the rest of the country what patriotism really means,” Cox said.

He continued, “There is nothing more un-American than hating our fellow Americans. Unity does not mean agreement. It means working together. It means believing in the institutions that those founders created 250 years ago that are still alive today, by the grace of God.”

Here are three quotes from the event:

Marie Osmond: The performer and philanthropist conducted the kickoff event where she praised Utahns for forging “close knit communities” and for leading the nation in “volunteerism and charitable giving.”

U.S. Rep. Celeste Maloy: “What a blessing it is to be able to disagree with the government, what a blessing it is to be able to participate in the government, what a blessing to be able to hold our own government accountable, and if we can focus on that ... I think we’ve got another 250 years.”

Gov. Cox: “We get a year, starting July 4 until next year, to celebrate what made this country so unique, so special. May God bless you, may God bless the great state of Utah, and may God continue to bless these United States of America.” Read more about the anniversary celebration.

Car-camping to Capitol Hill: The remarkable rise of Sen. Curtis’ right-hand man
