Starting a new ECI? Have your say in Budapest!

Dear friends,

From Friday 23th to Sunday 25th November we will meet in Budapest. Our main aim is to discuss the feasibility of a new European Citizenship Initiative (ECI), agree upon a subject text and plan an ECI campaign.

There are different proposals for the subject of a new ECI which we discussed at our Gothenburg meeting in Spring 2018. Due to scarce time resources we decided to hold a longer meeting to discuss the various approaches more deeply and different proposals for the subject, with the goal to find a consensus.

Our meeting will be preceded on Friday by a public conference on UBI and the European Elections.

Thank you to all who attended and supported us at the BIEN Congress in Tampere in August and at our Summer School in Barcelona in September. Reports of both these events will be coming soon!

Kind greetings on behalf of the UBIE Core Group,

Ulrich Schachtschneider

UBI mentioned by UN leader

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, mentioned UBI in his speech to the General Assembly on 25 September 2018.
After discussing the changing nature of work, he appealed to world leaders to consider universal basic income in his speech at the UN General Assembly.
The video link dispatched by the UN can be accessed here, and the text of his speech is here.

Liverpool Council passes motion to pilot Basic Income

A call for Liverpool to be the first English city to test a Universal Basic Income (UBI) was discussed at the City Council meeting 19 September. A motion calling for Liverpool to pilot UBI 'under the next Labour Government' passed easily, although the leader of the Green Party councillors complained that when they had proposed a similar motion last year, it was knocked back by the same Labour members supporting this one.
You can read about the motion and its backers (including Cllr Anne O'Byrne, pictured) here.

Support UBIE now

Unconditional Basic Income Europe (UBIE) connects over 350 active members from over 30 countries across the continent. They invest huge amounts of their time, energy and money into raising public awareness as well as support among key decision makers at EU level. As a result, basic income is now on the agenda in the policy debates of many European countries. With your help, we can strengthen our financial foundation in order to improve our work and accelerate the UBI journey.
