A snowshoer and a happy dog on a powdery trail lined by snow-heavy trees

Hi Friends!

Happy New Year! As we plow through the first weeks of winter, it’s getting much colder in our neck of the woods. If you’re feeling the chill too, check out our winter camping tips for expert advice on how to stay safe and comfortable if you're planning a cold-weather adventure.

We just updated our review of the award-winning Zpacks Duplex. Don't miss it if you're gearing up for a backpacking trip this spring. We’ve been using this puppy for over a decade on dozens of treks and hundreds of nights and it’s still one of our ultralight favorites.

In the market for some new kicks? We also have a brand new review of the La Sportiva Spire GTX hiking shoes. We recently put them through the wringer while hiking in the Colorado Rockies - we're impressed.

Speaking of brand new - we have an announcement! The CleverHiker crew is growing! We welcome ultra-organized Ben Applebaum-Bauch to the team as our Managing Editor, and adventure extraordinaire, Ian Krammer, as a new Gear Analyst. They both bring a wealth of backcountry knowledge and skill to the team. Get the full scoop on our About Us page.

As always, thanks for following, and happy hiking!

15 Winter Camping Tips
Winter camping can be a unique experience that creates life-long memories. We love snowshoeing, setting up camp, and connecting over hot drinks. Winter camping might seem harsh, but it’s surprisingly comfortable with the right gear.
Zpacks Duplex Tent Review
The Zpacks Duplex is the gold standard of ultralight backpacking shelters. Thanks to a spacious design, impressive weather resistance, and extremely low weight, it’s been one of our go-to tents for hundreds of nights on the trail.
La Sportiva Spire GTX Review
One of La Sportiva’s most unique shoes, the Spire GTX is a hiking boot masquerading as a trail runner. These shoes have received high praise in both the fastpacking and hiking worlds – but do they live up to the buzz? Check out our new review.
Best Winter Gloves
When the temps drop, your blood flows away from your extremities, which is why fingers tend to be the first things to get cold. A good pair of gloves will keep you comfortable so you can enjoy the outdoors no matter the weather.
GEAR PICK OF THE WEEK
Kahtoola MICROspikes
Kahtoola MICROspikes

The Kahtoola MICROspikes were the first traction devices designed specifically for hikers – a lighter, more approachable version of crampons that work with any shoes. They’re what you’ll find on most hikers’ feet when snowshoes are overkill on compacted, high-traffic mountain trails.

We like MICROspikes for their aggressive traction and excellent strength to weight. The chain links also enable them to pack down smaller than those made with more rubber material. There are lighter and cheaper options out there, but you won’t find better quality and durability for mixed mountain terrain than the MICROspikes.

See how the MICROs compare on our list of the Best Winter Traction Devices.
