They formed in 1968, and were composed of Herb Murrell, Airrion Love, James Smith, and James Dunn. All of their U.S. hits were ballads, graced by the lush productions of Thom Bell, which helped make the Stylistics one of the most successful soul groups of the first half of the 1970s. During the early 1970s, the group had twelve consecutive U.S. R&B top ten hits, including âStop, Look, Listenâ, âYou Are Everythingâ, âBetcha by Golly, Wowâ, âPeople Make the World Go Roundâ, âIâm Stone in Love with Youâ, âBreak Up to Make Upâ, and âYou Make Me Brand New.â. Todayâs Stylistics are the two originals, Love and Murrell, joined by Barrington Henderson and Jason Sharp. The original âPeaches & Herb,â Herb Fame and Francine âPeachesâ Hurd Baker, scored their first national hit in 1966, a revival of 1934 hit, âLetâs Fall In Love.â The duo followed with a string of hits in 1967 and â68 including âClose Your Eyes,â âFor Your Loveâ and âLove Is Strangeâ and became the Sweethearts of Soul. Barker then retired but continued to pursue a solo career before Herb re-started Peaches & Herb in 1976. Since then, Herb has continued in his role while six different ladies have performed as Peaches.
