“It’s so visceral, so intense”

If the Alanis Morissette musical Jagged Little Pill has a show-stopper, it’s Jade McLeod’s performance of “You Oughta Know,” which has earned the Toronto performer mid-show standing ovations. Since landing the role last spring, McLeod has toured the show across the United States, and now it’s running through the end of November at the Princess of Wales Theatre. McLeod spoke to Toronto Life about being a role model for queer kids and the invaluable advice that came straight from Morissette herself.

Real Weddings

Petrina Huang and Billy Chan met in 2011, when they were high schoolers working part-time as lifeguards at a community pool in Markham. The couple got engaged ten years later on a trip to Alberta and were married in a Newmarket greenhouse with a traditional Chinese tea ceremony and a late-night bubble tea truck. Here’s how the big day came together.

Game Time

Torontonian Cherry Ann Gorst had been watching The Price Is Right for a decade when she had the chance to compete on the long-running game show in August. She ended up winning the whole thing—and $28,000 (US) in cash and prizes. “Drew called my name, and the cameras zoomed over to me,” says Gorst. “I was stunned—I barely remember it.” Here’s how it all went down.

A cosmic communion with a late jazz master

American artist, writer and saxophonist Yusef Lateef is best known as a virtuoso of jazz. Now, Night in the Garden of Love, a new exhibition presented in collaboration with British artist Shezad Dawood, seeks to recast Lateef as a polymath by showcasing his drawings, paintings and textiles. The exhibition places the artists in conversation as they engage with topics like creativity, ecology and the power of music. Nov. 10 to May 5, Aga Khan Museum
