Happy Thanksgiving! Dear John, It's okay to feel weird about Thanksgiving this year. If you're like me, you're feeling a dozen different emotions. Here they are: Guilt: You told some people you care about; you cannot see them on the one day each year everyone looks forward to being together. That sucks. Anger: Somebody could have done something to keep us from getting to this place with COVID, right? That's not a productive emotion. Let that one go. Fear: You don't want your parents getting COVID and you don't want to get it yourself. The news is full of horror stories of people who did everything right and had a bad outcome after getting COVID. Frustration: You see other, less cautious people, gathering with their families and it is bothersome. Are you really the only sucker not having a family get-together? Loss: We each only have a finite number of Thanksgivings. Maybe 80, 90 or so. Who knows how many you've got left? You're just going to give this one up? Isolation: You haven't had a hug from someone who doesn't live with you since March 13. Now that we've got that out of our system. Here are the other six emotions you're feeling: Fortunate: You and your family are safe and healthy right now. Belonging: You're reading this and you know I'm with you. I feel the same thing you feel. We are distant in life but together in spirit. Relief: Nobody is judging how over/undercooked your turkey is and they won't sit around (after five drinks) and talk shit about how you over/under cooked the turkey last year. Happiness: You can hold the hand of your partner/spouse. You can hug your kids or your dog because they live with you. And you get to do that as long as you all stay healthy. Hope: Vaccines are on the way. By the summer this will be a memory and you will have a sense of freedom. Gratitude: You're healthy. Your family is safe. You've got many future holidays ahead of you. There is food on your table. You're not alone because I'm here with you, feeling all these things. May God bless you and keep you safe! Thank you for being with me during this unusual and emotional year. Keep the faith!
