Search and rescue efforts continued in Turkey and Syria following Monday's devastating earthquakes as the death toll continued to climb, soaring past 5,000 people. A massive effort is now underway amid fears of more aftershocks to save as many survivors buried under collapsed buildings as possible. As aftershocks combined with wet and freezing weather hampers search and rescue work, volunteers fear hypothermia may kill those still trapped in the rubble. The U.S. is sending two highly trained and well-equipped search and rescue teams to help, one each from Virginia and Southern California. The Los Angeles County team, which specializes in earthquakes, has deployed to previous disasters, including the 2017 earthquake in Mexico City. Follow our live coverage of the aftermath. The earthquake triggered a new wave of suffering for families in northwest Syria, who have spent nearly a decade besieged by war.
The type of fault line and the shallow depth of Monday's massive earthquake made it one of the most consequential and damaging in recent history.
The 7.5-magnitude aftershock about nine hours after the initial earthquake, was closer to the primary quake in magnitude than is usual, experts said. |
