The latest unemployment figures should not come as too much of a surprise. Given that millions of people have been furloughed since the end of March and it was expected that the Government scheme would end in October, it was almost inevitable that many of those whose jobs had disappeared would be made redundant. Of course, since then the Government has extended the scheme, but for some industries that would simply be prolonging the agony to come. For the people on the sharp end of these figures, the last six months have been a life-changer ... and not in a good way. Many of the 4.8 per cent who currently find themselves out of work had good prospects just this time last year and it is unlikely that many sectors will be recruiting heavily any time soon. What we need to ensure is that as we start to come out of the Covid nightmare, we provide opportunities to retrain and offer genuine, skilled jobs to get everyone back on their feet financially as well as physically. That’s a tough challenge, but one which must succeed. I would like to ask if those of you who do not yet subscribe to www.lep.co.uk would consider taking out a digital subscription.
