A rural North Carolina county built its own internet network. Then its telecom provider pushed back.
Facing an internet infrastructure crisis, Wilson County in rural North Carolina decided to build its own broadband network as a utility for its residents, just like water or power. Time Warner Cable, its telecom provider at the time, wouldn’t let that happen without a fight.
