Serial killer paroled: Nearly a half-century ago, at age 16 and high on drugs, Warren Harris Jr. fatally stabbed at least three men in and around the French Quarter. The Times-Picayune reported in April 1977 that Harris' crimes were motivated by a "revulsion of homosexuals," and the murders prompted the New Orleans police superintendent to publicly caution the city's gay community. Last week, after 46 years in prison, Harris was granted parole. Gabby Killett has the details.
A new subdivision: The Jefferson Parish Council gave developers the green light to build a new subdivision on the West Bank, despite ongoing opposition from residents who say there's already abundant housing available in the area. Blake Paterson has the latest on the controversial project.
Title IX: The federal government released new rules last week extending civil rights protections to LGBTQ+ students, saying discrimination against students based on sexual orientation and gender identity is prohibited under Title IX. But Louisiana’s top education official advised school districts Monday not to comply. Patrick Wall has more on how the move could lead to a showdown with the Biden administration.
