Dear Voornaam,
Two weeks ago I received a telephone call from a prospective client. We will call him âPeterâ (because thatâs his name). Peter is a consultant who helps businesses get contracts with the United States Government. He reached out to me because, while business was good, most of his clients were âad-hoc,â meaning they worked with him one time and he never heard from them again.Â
Peterâs problem - finding repeat & recurring revenue - is one that I have 25-plus years of experience solving. Iâve solved this problem in my own business as well as in the businesses of dozens of clients. The formula is easy to understand, yet few implement it correctly the first time they attempt it.Â
Why?Â
Because it requires experience, skill and knowledge. If you have not done this before, you will make mistakes.Â
As we have our conversation, Peterâs pain bursts through the phone.Â
The pandemic caused a lack of predictability in his new client origination. This forced him to get a line of credit. As the pandemic continued, Peter continued to use his old methods of client attraction and he continued to have sporadic success - far less success than he had pre-2020.Â
Now, Peter has payments on his credit line as well as his general business expenses and even a budding economic recovery may not be enough to help him cover his monthly expenses.Â
In other words, Peter is working harder and bringing less money to the bottom line than before and he recognizes that a repeat & recurring revenue model will solve this.Â
But he doesnât have the time to figure this out on his own. His learning curve is steep and he needs to grow his revenue fast. He tells me he has spoken to other âbusiness gurusâ and none of them have a history of successfully solving this problem. They all want to help him attract brand new clients - something he already knows how to do.
Peter understands the value in repeat and recurring revenue. He knows that shifting the focus of his business development efforts in this direction will help him make more money with less effort.Â
We came to an agreement that I would work with Peter to develop this new revenue model. We began sketching out a profile of the client he will need to attract to fit this model. It turns out, this client is different from most of the folks he currently attracts. Now, he goes after anyone looking to work with the government.Â
Based upon my recommendation, he will immediately begin shifting to focus on people who work EXCLUSIVELY on government contracts or who want government business to be at least 50% of their revenue. This way, Peter can assist with multiple opportunities and not just one at a time.Â
This is a good strategy and Peter and I have a lot of work to do. I am going to share the work we are doing together and give you a window into our activity during the next couple of months. While you may never have thought of making this kind of shift in your firm, Peterâs experience may help you discover new opportunities.
Here is todayâs take-away:
If you want to grow your business, and you want to be sure it will work, look for someone who can provide you with the three valuable qualities:Â
Fresh Ideas Based Upon Experience
There are good ideas that you have not yet discovered. These may be things other firms like yours are using successfully, or they may be things that professionals in other industries and practices are using that we can import into your business.Â
Thatâs where a fresh set of eyes can help.
There is enormous benefit in connecting with someone who has worked with hundreds of people like you, dozens of firms like yours, and knows the strategy and tactics involved in your success.Â
Speed of Success
Trial and error is expensive. Donât figure things out on your own. You must work with an expert who can expedite your success. Perhaps the greatest value in working with someone who has a focus in this area is you donât have to worry about IF something will work because there is a track record.Â
When you try to do things without an expert, youâll be more likely to fail, frequently, before you succeed. This is slow.Â
Accountability
You have many competing priorities. In order to make your business growth a priority, you need someone advocating for implementation of these great ideas. Missing just one week or even one day of execution can set you back.
Working with an expert who will hold you accountable is essential to revenue growth.
