Discover the power of contemporary painting at the
Hayward Gallery

Painting: it's often considered one of the more traditional, conservative forms of artistic expression. But a thrilling new exhibition at Southbank Centre's Hayward Gallery is currently tearing that reputation to shreds.

Mixing It Up: Painting Today brings together 31 contemporary artists who demonstrate just how conceptually adventurous painting can be. From vernacular photography to viral memes, advertising to art history, this diverse group of painters draw inspiration from an incredible array of territories to create bold, fresh, and of-the-moment works of art.

The exhibition is open right now and runs until 12 December. Standard tickets cost £12, under 12s go free, and concession tickets start at just a fiver (psst... that includes anyone under 30!) Advance booking is essential — click the big blue button to arrange your visit.

A Celebration Of Diversity

Mixing It Up puts the spotlight on three generations of artists, all of whom live and work in the UK. These painters come from a variety of different backgrounds — over a third of participating artists were born overseas, including countries in Africa, Asia, South America, and North America — and the show highlights the UK's emergence as a vital international centre for the medium.

A Chance To See Things Differently

Literal or allegorical? Illusion or materiality? Each piece on display invites a multitude of interpretations and you, the viewer, are challenged to use your imagination and think about how the reception of each work might shift among different audiences.

A Critical Success

Mixing It Up "demands to be seen", according to the Evening Standard. The Observer called it "absorbing and dynamic", while The Independent deemed it "a big, punchy, entertaining show with an unstoppably upbeat vibe". All three reviewers gave it four stars and, with so many bold and challenging works on display, we reckon you'll love it, too.
