Dear Supporter, I am writing to ask you to sign an urgent global petition issued by the UN Refugee Agency. UNHCR is facing the greatest refugee crisis in its history, with more than 65 million people displaced due to conflict. Meanwhile, the number of refugee resettlement places offered last year, by all governments globally, was just 140,000. In response to this unprecedented crisis, UNHCR has launched #WithRefugees, a global petition calling on governments to protect people who simply cannot return home. As UNHCR’s national partner for this country, Australia for UNHCR has launched a web page to allow Australians to take part in this global action. Please make your voice heard by adding your name. Sign our #WithRefugees petition today. UNHCR will present the names of all citizen signatories to the UN General Assembly next year. This will accompany UNHCR’s submission of the Global Compact for Refugees – a new blueprint for action to galvanise governments to safeguard refugees’ rights, and better support host countries that are most impacted by displacement. UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Cate Blanchett, explains why it's important to add your voice to this global movement to protect refugees. Millions of vulnerable refugees rely on the humanitarian aid that UNHCR is delivering every minute of every day. More than ever, refugees need our ongoing help and protection. I hope you can join me in standing with refugees at this critical time. Naomi Steer National Director Australia for UNHCR |
