Gothic literary fiction and dance theatre collide this May, as Northern Ballet’s acclaimed (and oh-so-atmospheric) adaptation of Jane Eyre storms into Sadler’s Wells.

Whether you’re a longtime Charlotte Brontë devotee, a fan of expressive choreography, or just appreciate a strong female lead, this passionate production needs to be on your radar.

This classic tale of dark secrets and brooding romance is brought to life with soul-stirring choreography by Cathy Marston, haunting music performed live and exceptional dance-actors. It’s at Sadler’s Wells 13-17 May only, so get tickets while you can.

A heroine ahead of her time

Only got the vaguest memories of Jane Eyre from your school days? It goes something like this: our eponymous heroine accepts the position of governess at Thornfield Hall, on the Yorkshire Moors. Here, a spark kindles between Jane and her new employer, the brooding Mr Rochester. But there is more to him and his towering manor house than meets the eye…

Don’t go thinking Jane is any kind of passive protagonist, though — she’s a fiercely independent survivor, and the character’s quiet defiance and inner strength is expressed beautifully through movement in Northern Ballet’s adaptation.

Ballet, but not as you know it

Northern Ballet is known for pushing the boundaries of what ballet can be, and this adaptation is no exception. Expect dramatic, nuanced and deeply human displays of dance theatre.

A critical triumph

Don’t just take our word for it. Here’s just some of glowing praise Northern Ballet’s Jane Eyre has garnered from the critics:

Jane Eyre has been reimagined a thousand times before, but maybe never quite so perfectly as this production by Northern Ballet. ★★★★★ The Yorkshire Post
Cathy Marston displays a novelist’s touch in layering characters in her wonderfully choreographed show for Northern Ballet. ★★★★ The Guardian
Northern Ballet’s new Jane Eyre is a beautiful and expressive tribute to Brontë ★★★★ The Telegraph
