Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Chicago Sports Radio Host
Danny Parkins

Danny Parkins, a sports radio host on AM670's The Score in Chicago, completed a 24-hour radiothon on Thursday that will benefit his community for years to come.

The "What About Chicago?" radiothon -- a name Parkins picked to push back on a question often thrown around during partisan political arguments -- aimed to raise enough money to build a grocery store on Chicago's West Side. The area is one of many around the country described as a "food desert," where fast food restaurants and convenience stores might be found, but with limited availability of fresh, healthy foods at reasonable prices.

The specific location benefited by the radiothon was a former liquor store, damaged during last year's protests, that had been converted into a pop-up grocery store. With help from former Chicago Bears linebacker Sam Acho and over 4,600 donors, they raised over $650,000. The funds will be used to build a permanent location for the Austin Harvest grocery store, keep it open seven days a week, and run an after-school program for area youth.

Parkins' efforts will bring long-term, significant improvement to the lives of many of his fellow Chicagoans. A wonderful reminder of the power -- and hope -- that can come from local efforts. Kudos to Parkins and his team; may they be trendsetters for many others across America.

MEDIA LOSER:
Rudy Giuliani

"When you're in a hole, stop digging!" If Rudy Giuliani has ever heard this advice, he sure isn't acting like it. After a New York state appellate court suspended his law license for making "demonstrably false" statements in his effort to pursue former President Donald Trump's baseless election fraud claims, Giuliani vented his anger...by making more demonstrably false statements.

CNN legal analyst Elie Honig noted it is "very, very rare" for an attorney's license to be suspended like this, but the court did find an "imminent threat to the public" from Giuliani's "continuing pattern" of conduct, as well the high likelihood that the evidence would support permanently disbarring him.

Giuliani complained to Newsmax's Greg Kelly, again pushing unfounded conspiracy theories about the election and claiming the suspension was because he had "represented my client so effectively, they're trying to get me to shut up." (His son, Andrew Giuliani, also tweeted a rant incorrectly blaming the DOJ for his father's state law license woes.)

“All I can say is, America is not America any longer,” said Giuliani. Oh, please. He shoved his own way into the main ring of Trump's traveling legal circus, commandeering local landscaping companies and wildly misstating basic matters of fact and law, of his own free will. The ridicule and professional rebuke are well-earned.

Celebrity Deathmatch: 2021 Media Edition

Celebrity Deathmatchthe MTV claymation series featuring parody versions of celebrities engaging in garishly violent wrestling matches, hasn't aired any new episodes since 2007, but if the show ever gets another reboot, many of America's top current media personalities could provide ample inspiration.

The fallout continues from the New York Times' Ben Smith outing Fox News' Tucker Carlson as a prolific source for many inside-baseball media stories (including gossip about his own network). Speculation is running rampant that the publisher of CNN's Brian Stelter's new book outed Carlson. Carlson responded, natch, by mocking Stelter's book sales (again, the book for which he was a source).

One of Carlson's fellow Fox News colleagues, Mark Levin, attacked Carlson for going against the family, questioning his "loyalty" and "character." Less surprising but no less vehement was the criticism from CNN's Brianna Keilar.

Carlson also attacked a Black MSNBC contributor by comparing him to former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke (just days after he earned a rebuke from CNN's Don Lemon after he criticized Lemon for living in "one of the whitest towns in America.")

The situation isn't any nicer in the world of sports media. NBA Countdown host Jalen Rose piled on the criticism thrown at his ESPN colleague Jay Williams, absolutely destroying Williams' farfetched claim that a much-mocked tweet was posted by a hacker. And the bitter hatred between Scotty Pippen and Charles Barkley continues to fester.

"This strange phantom intersection between smart and stupid."

Conan O'Brien bid farewell to late-night on Thursday night, hosting the last episode of Conan for TBS with an all-star cast of friends joining him. (He's heading to host a new weekly show on HBO Max.)

Highlights included an animated chat with Homer Simpson (a callback to O'Brien's first job as a TV writer for The Simpsons), a musical performance by Jack Black in all his bizarre glory, and a montage of clips from some favorite past guests.

“I’ve devoted all of my adult life — all of it — to pursuing this strange phantom intersection between smart and stupid," O'Brien said to his viewers. "And there’s a lot of people who believe the two cannot coexist, but God, I will tell you, it is something that I believe religiously,” he shared. “I think when smart and stupid come together, it’s very difficult, but if you can make it happen, I think it’s the most beautiful thing in the world.”
