New data proves the stereotypes about lazy millennials are wrong
I don’t need to spend more time outlining what’s said about millennials — you’ve heard it, you’ve seen it, it’s basically in the air at this point.
But we did our digging into US Census Bureau data, and it showed the stereotypes to be wrong in one substantial way: just as many American millennials have been quietly supporting their parents as boomers who have been supporting their adult children.
We found that 1.4 million American millennials supported their parents in 2016, the most recent year for which data was available. That number was statistically indistinguishable from the number of boomers supporting their adult children in the same year.
From taking care of parents with health issues to helping parents who made poor financial decisions, we reached out to the millennials supporting their parents, and they told us their stories.
STAYING ON TOP OF THIS Twitter will make exceptions to its political ad ban
Recently, Twitter said it will be going forward with a ban on political advertising, but the company still hasn’t hammered out the exact contours of the policy.
One advertiser briefed on Twitter’s plans told us that Twitter staffers suggested that ads that spread awareness about issues would still be allowed after the ban takes effect. However, ads that advocate for a specific candidate or piece of legislation will be banned.
So for example: Ads talking about climate change generally are likely going to be accepted; ads about the legislation that would enact the Green New Deal are not.
SNAPSHOTS A black man was handcuffed for eating a sandwich at a train station. Officials are now apologizing. Video of the incident showed officers for Bay Area Rapid Transit detaining the man after he was spotted eating a sandwich on a train platform. The incident has sparked anger and “eat-ins.”
An OB-GYN allegedly gave women unnecessary hysterectomies and tied their tubes without their consent. Javaid Perwaiz, 69, was arrested and charged in Virginia with health care fraud and making false statements relating to health care matters. Perwaiz allegedly scared many patients into having surgery by claiming that “onset of cancer was imminent” for them.
Olivia Colman asked Prince William if he’s seen The Crown and it didn’t go very well. She said when she excitedly asked the prince if he’s watching, he replied with a “firm no.”
A woman’s boyfriend bought flowers for her friend who was going through a rough time. Then Twitter ruined it. Basically, the often-snarky social internet saw a sweet gesture and came out with a much different read, because we can’t have nice things.

In a time of uncertainty over the environmental impact of fast-fashion and what happens to your clothes after you donate them, a new market is rising: Rental startup Le Tote has been successful enough that it just bought Lord & Taylor, and just this year, a number of fashion brands — including Banana Republic, Scotch & Soda, and Ann Taylor Loft — have started spinning out their own rental services.
Shannon Keating wrote about trying the renting-your-clothes life: “I wish I was the kind of person who felt great in their own version of a uniform, but I’m just not a minimalist at heart. I like flair; I like color; I like shapes and patterns; I like getting weird with earrings and shoes. Most of all, I like having the opportunity to surprise myself.”
TENDER MOMENT Jeopardy’s Alex Trebek got choked up after a contestant shared a heartfelt message
Trebek, who is being treated for pancreatic cancer, is famously unflappable. Nothing could throw the man off his game.
So it was an especially lovely moment when it did happen. During the “Final Jeopardy” round, contestants were asked to name an 1890 exposé about poverty in New York. Trebek prepared to read contestant Dhruv Gaur's answer and instead saw a message: “We love you Alex.”
Trebek got momentarily choked up and thanked Gaur, before returning to his hosting duties.
