Department chairs work on academe’s front line, but they often wish they had more training – and more respect. Sandwiched between the administration and the faculty, chairs are heavily involved in hiring and firing decisions, settling conflicts among colleagues, negotiating for money and positions, making student success a priority, and many other tasks central to daily life in the academy.
