A tree in the middle of Lake Martin that might be 1,000 years old catches fire

The future of an iconic cypress tree at Lake Martin is unknown after it erupted in flames during a Friday night storm.

The tree, which is estimated to be hundreds of years old, remains intact but is charred with a hole at its core. It was not immediately clear how the damage — thought to be caused by a lightning strike — might impact the health of the tree.

"Cypress trees are kind of like Louisiana's people," said Ben Pierce, a photographer who serves as the executive director of the Boy Scouts of America's Swamp Base.
