Dear Friend,

Following Wednesday’s Trump-inspired domestic terror attack on the Capitol, The New Republic’s photo director, Stephanie Heimann, spent the night producing a remarkable photo-essay of stunning images documenting the insurrection by photojournalist Ron Haviv. Heimann noted that this was actually “the second coup attempt Ron and I have worked on; the first was the 1993 Russian White House insurgency.” And Haviv also photographed dozens of conflicts over three decades.

As TNR contributing editor Bob Moser wrote, when Haviv “watched President Trump order his fever-pitch mob of supporters to ‘walk down to the Capitol’ on Wednesday to somehow correct the ‘egregious assault on our democracy’ involved in counting and certifying votes, Haviv could gauge better than most what might happen next.… It took only an hour or so for rioters answering the call of their mad overlord to push past Capitol Police.”

The New Republic is often the go-to destination when events such as this need context, so it’s not surprising that since the morning after the attack, when Heimann published the photo-essay at NewRepublic.com, it has been viewed by a huge audience.

The best way to stay informed on our country’s growing domestic terror threat is to read Bob Moser, view the work of Stephanie Heimann and Ron Haviv, and follow the best investigative reporters, opinion writers, and cultural critics in America.

Sincerely,

Kerrie Gillis, publisher
