Where's Johnny Jet?

It's been a crazy and sad week in the travel industry, and the world. Friday’s horrific terrorist attacks in Paris have us all on edge. After hearing the news I looked through my photo gallery for a picture of Paris to share on Instagram and all I could find to match my sorrow was the one above. It’s of a sculpture in the Tuileries Garden that I took back in August.
What to do in a city where’s there’s been a terrorist attack
Sadly, until governments around the world wake up and extinguish these barbarians, this could be the new norm. Fortunately, I’ve never been smack in the middle of a terrorist attack, but I was in Manhattan during 9/11, in India during the terror attacks in Mumbai in 2008 and in Los Angeles during the riots (not a terrorist attack but it was scary like one). I was also in France this past August when three Americans thwarted a bloody train massacre. If, God forbid, you’re ever in a city where’s there’s a terrorist attack or you’re about to travel to one, hopefully you'll find this information helpful.
American Airlines' new (and lame) 2016 AAdvantage program
Almost every travel and points expert predicted that American Airlines would follow Delta and United and begin awarding miles based on ticket price rather than distance flown. And now they have. Here’s what you need to know
Marriott to buy Starwood Hotels
A couple of days ago Marriott announced that it will buy Starwood Hotels for $12.2 billion! In doing so, it will create the world’s largest hotel company. Everyone knew Starwood was looking to sell and there were rumors that a Chinese company or Hyatt Hotels were going to buy them, but I don’t think anyone imagined Marriott was going to swoop in and acquire Starwood. Here’s what I think is going to happen to my favorite points program.
ATA in Nairobi, Kenya
Since we sent out our last newsletter, our editor Ian has been representing JohnnyJet.com at the Africa Travel Association's 40th Annual World Congress in Nairobi, Kenya. On Thursday he spoke as part of a panel on best practices in travel media, influencer-destination relationships and the immediate future of tourism in Africa. Next year's congress is already in the works and is to be held in one of the area's most impressive cities: Kigali, Rwanda.
