Editor's Picks Members of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) are advocating for an expansion of residency training topics, including training on medications used to treat opioid abuse and training on billing and coding. These issues were discussed during the 2019 National Conference of Constituency Leaders, held April 25-27. Brandon Hamm, MD, MS, consultation liaison psychiatry fellow, and Sharon Ezzo, MS, C-TAGME, coordinator for the adult psychiatry residency program at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, implemented an innovative, technology-based system for tracking resident attendance at didactic lectures. By coupling QR codes and a survey tool to track resident attendance, residency coordinators and residents have seen many benefits. Many institutions have excellent annual program evaluation (APE) processes that include templates, dashboards, and reports that guide programs through the process and yield data to improve their programs. Although effective, there’s another mechanism that can reveal valuable insights to help programs get the most out of their APEs: the graduate medical education committee (GMEC). Marketing Spotlight The Graduate Medical Education Program Management Workbook is an educational tool for coordinators and GME professionals responsible for managing a GME training program. This workbook includes knowledge application questions grouped by topic areas, listings of commonly used acronyms, and helpful GME resources. Program coordinators can use this workbook to create a self-learning plan, to aid in the creation of a procedural manual for their offices, to identify areas for personal and program improvement, and to prepare for ACGME continuous accreditation through education. Although created for the individual coordinator, this tool can also be purchased and distributed by GME offices as a way to support the education of their program managers and staff.
