AB Espresso: UAE announces $205mn Emirates Road expansion

The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure will begin an AED750 million project in September 2025 to expand and improve Emirates Road. The two-year project aims to reduce traffic congestion and support the UAE’s federal road network and economic development goals.

In other major developments, Federal Tax Authority (FTA) inspectors have confiscated more than 3.5 million excise goods hidden in shipments of clothing and footwear. The products, including tobacco and beverages, were found in a Dubai facility violating UAE tax regulations.

Apart from this, pet owners in the UAE face emergency surgery costs of up to AED12,000, yet fewer than 10 per cent of pets are insured. With over 1.5 million pet owners in the country, experts predict increased demand for pet insurance amid growing veterinary expenses. But, is it worth it?

On the transport front, Wizz Air will suspend its Abu Dhabi operations from 1 September 2025. The airline said it will shift its business strategy to focus on European markets following a review of regional market conditions.

Meanwhile, Diriyah Company has awarded a $600 million contract to Salini Saudi Arabia for construction of the Diriyah Square retail precinct. The development will include 400 retail, dining and leisure outlets as part of the broader Diriyah Masterplan.
