| | | | | | Lavender is a perennial shrub widespread in the Mediterranean region. It has a long history of use as a culinary ingredient, in cosmetics and in traditional medicine. Lavender is currently used to treat headaches, toothaches, sore joints, skin diseases, colic, and to reduce anxiety and depression. It is also used by itself or in combination with other essential oils as a fragrance in soaps, moisturizers, for massage and in aromatherapy. Clinical studies show benefits of lavender aromatherapy in improving memory loss in patients with dementia, in decreasing preoperative anxiety, and in reducing the need for pain medication following surgery. Lavender was also reported to improve sleep quality, dysmenorrhea and emotional symptoms, renal colic, and to reduce the severity of migraine headaches. Oral preparations of lavender were found to relieve symptoms in patients with mild to moderate depression and in those with generalized anxiety disorder. Although laboratory studies reported anticancer effects, lavender did not lower anxiety in cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. More research is needed. | | | |

| | | Take Note Of: Tai Chi (Tai Ji) | | An ancient practice that originated in China, tai chi involves a sequence of precise body movements, meditation, and synchronized breathing to improve health and well-being. It can be practiced by individuals of any age as the movements are gentle with little stress on the body. Tai chi has been studied in elderly, frail, and disabled patients, as well as in those with fibromyalgia, arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, and cancer. Data show that tai chi reduces risk of falls, inflammation, and bone loss. It was also found to improve strength, sleep, balance, flexibility, blood pressure, immune function, and mental outlook. To support the recovery and well-being of cancer patients, the Integrative Medicine Service offers tai chi as part of our online program, Integrative Medicine at Home, as well as other classes and therapies. | | | |
