| | | | Shiitake is an edible mushroom that is valued for its medicinal effects. Both the fresh and dried forms of shiitake are also used in Asian cuisine. Lentinan, a polysaccharide derived from shiitake, has been extensively researched. It was found responsible for the mushroom’s health promoting effects. An injectable form of lentinan is used in some countries as a cancer treatment, but it has not been evaluated in large studies.
Shiitake extracts have shown immunostimulatory, antiproliferative, hepatoprotective and antimutagenic properties in laboratory experiments and in animal studies. Small trials reported benefits of shiitake extracts in improving the quality of life of cancer patients receiving immunotherapy; and in reducing side effects caused by chemotherapy in advanced gastrointestinal cancer patients. Larger studies are needed to confirm the anticancer potential.
Shiitake is generally considered safe when taken as part of diet by cancer survivors.

| | | Take Note Of: Essiac | | Essiac is an herbal formulation containing burdock, sheep sorrel, slippery elm, and rhubarb. Essiac and its variant Flor-essence are marketed as anticancer treatments in the form of powders, capsules, teas, and liquid extracts. During the 1970s and 80s, researchers in Canada and in the United States including those at the National Cancer Institute conducted studies with Essiac but did not find any evidence of effectiveness.
Despite lack of supportive data, Essiac and its variants remain popular and are promoted to reduce tumor burden, improve immune response, relieve pain, lower toxic effects of chemotherapy, and to improve survival.
Patients should avoid Essiac as its safety and efficacy remain undocumented.
