| | | | | | A pungent and colorless compound, capsaicin is found in cayenne peppers, which are used as a spice around the world. They are also used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and in Ayurveda for relieving arthritis and muscle pain. Currently, capsaicin is used as an active ingredient in some topical creams and nasal sprays for pain relief. A meta-analysis suggests that topical capsaicin is comparable to NSAIDs in reducing osteoarthritic pain. Also, a high-concentration capsaicin dermal patch was found effective against post-herpetic neuralgia and has been approved for prescription use. It was also reported useful in relieving pain associated with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). But data are limited to assess its benefits against neuropathic pain due to HIV, diabetes, and mastectomy or for rheumatoid arthritis. Additional studies have shown that a capsaicin ointment improved swallowing function in elderly patients with dysphagia. It may also be useful in reducing cannabis-associated hyperemesis. Whether or not it can relieve cluster headaches is not known. | | | |

| | | Take Note Of: Maroon Bush | | A bushy shrub native to Australia, maroon bush is used by the Aboriginal people to treat colds, stomach ailments, and as a diuretic. Extracts prepared from maroon bush showed antibacterial and antiviral effects in laboratory studies. Infusions prepared from the leaves and branches are believed to have anticancer properties, which spurred interest in using this plant as an alternative cancer treatment. However, human studies have yet to be conducted. Cancer patients should avoid taking products containing maroon bush because their safety and efficacy are not known. | | | |
