Clinical trials reported utility of cranberry in treating urinary tract infections (UTIs) in adults and in children, in preventing cystitis, and in reducing the risk of UTIs in prostate cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy. But definitive data are needed for recommending cranberry for preventing UTIs.
In other studies, regular intake of cranberry juice was found to suppress H. pylori infection, a major factor in peptic ulcer disease, which may lead to gastric cancer. It may also improve the risk factors for cardiovascular disease in diabetic men. | | | Take Note Of: Pennyroyal | | Pennyroyal is a flowering plant that was used in folk medicine to induce abortion, relieve menstrual symptoms, and to treat inflammatory conditions and minor ailments.
Pennyroyal oil is highly toxic and is not recommended for internal use. A compound called pulegone is thought to be responsible for the toxic effects. Studies in both animals and humans showed that pulegone is also directly toxic to the nervous system. There have been a number of case reports and several deaths attributed to the use of Pennyroyal. | | | |
