| | | | Arnica is a perennial herb found in East Asia, Europe, Northern United States and Canada. It has a long medicinal history and continues to be popular today. Topical preparations of arnica are used for treating bruises, sprains, muscle aches, and arthritic pain. A highly diluted form of arnica is also used in homeopathy to treat pain, inflammation and low-grade fevers.
Small clinical trials suggest benefits of topical arnica in patients with osteoarthritic pain and skin bruising. Oral homeopathic preparations were also shown to reduce postoperative swelling in patients after knee surgery, to reduce bruising due to rhinoplasty, and to decrease pain after tonsillectomy. Larger, well-designed trials are needed to confirm these findings.

| | | Take Note Of: Mate | | Mate is an herb indigenous to South America. Its dried leaves are used to prepare a popular beverage. Mate is also used in traditional medicine as a stimulant and to treat inflammatory diseases. It is promoted in supplemental forms for weight loss, to treat cardiovascular diseases, and to prevent cancer.
Mate has antioxidant, cardio-protective, anti-inflammatory and apoptotic effects. In small clinical studies, a product containing mate helped delay gastric emptying, and had short-term effects on caloric intake and appetite regulation. Larger studies have yet to be conducted.
Prolonged ingestion of mate tea has been linked to increased risk of bladder, esophageal, lung, and head and neck cancers.
