Are you planning on traveling this Thanksgiving? I’ve never had a peaceful experience in an airport during this time of year, but the Salt Lake Airport is implementing some new technology that should make the process smoother for holiday travelers.

My colleague McKenna Jensen attended a press conference at the airport yesterday, where she got to see firsthand new body scanners and authentication methods.

“Salt Lake International Airport is gearing up for busy holiday travel, anticipating screening more than 200,000 people during the holiday season,” she wrote. “In preparation, TSA is encouraging travelers to arrive early, review the list of prohibited items, and ensure they are familiar with the latest security procedures to help ease the screening process.”

Abravanel Hall now on National Register of Historic Places

If you’ve kept an eye on our Opinion page over the last year, you’ve seen a number of letters to the editor from Utah residents concerned about Abravanel Hall. With Smith Entertainment Group's plans to revitalize downtown Salt Lake City, many feared the home of the Utah Symphony would be demolished.

Salt Lake County Council members and Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson recently confirmed they had no plans to change the building. Now, the National Park Service has accepted an application to list the building on the National Register of Historic Places.

“This national designation helps show that Abravanel Hall is an important and historical part of our county’s cultural landscape,” Wilson said in a statement. “We are honored to continue our nearly 50-year stewardship of this historical venue for Salt Lake County residents.”

Dennis Romboy reports: "While being listed on the National Register of Historic Places does not legally prevent alterations or demolition, it significantly raises awareness and appreciation of the building’s historic value."

Gov. Cox on the ‘earthquake election,’ and why he’s ‘12 years sober’ from cable news

Suzanne Bates writes: Republican Gov. Spencer Cox and Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy cracked jokes and spoke seriously about the 2024 election as they sat alongside one another at the University of Virginia as part of the Democracy Dialogues series.

In an age when more than half of members of the opposite party would rather have a colonoscopy than dine with either President-elect Donald Trump or Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Murphy and Cox weighed in on how to make things better.

Cox explained why he thought President-elect Donald Trump won the “earthquake election,” what disappointed him about both presidential campaigns, and why he and his wife, Utah first lady Abby Cox, are “12 years sober” from cable news, calling it “the best move we ever made.”

“I mean this sincerely. Our marriage got better, our family got stronger. There was more of joy in life because of that,” Cox said.
