What a year for banks

Good Morning Voornaam,

December means fun, friends and music. For investors in Warner Music Group, that's exactly what is needed. The music industry is growing at pace and Warner sits in exactly the right place in the value chain: with the artists! Does this make it a great investment? For only R99/month or R990/year, Magic Markets Premium subscribers will find out the answer today. Subscribe today and don't be left out>>>

Ghost Bites:

  • Absa is enjoying the banking party underway in the local economy and is posting ROE numbers that are beyond impressive
  • Capital & Counties brings us a property view from the UK
  • Sanity is prevailing with Fortress (until January, at least)
  • Karooooo's subscriber growth is looking strong
  • Sanlam's numbers are under pressure

I really can't get over the change in fortunes at Absa. I knew banking would do well this year, but a return on equity of 17% is very strong for a bank that hasn't exactly been the darling of the market. Get this story and more in Ghost Bites>>>

The rand isn't resti ng

After we managed to stay out of the headlines for the past couple of months, the events around President Ramaphosa took us straight back to where South Africa seems to love being: in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. To help you understand more about this rollercoaster, the team from TreasuryONE explains the rand movements in the context of this news and recent data. Read it here>>>

Meanwhile, oil finds itself in a tug-of-war with the opening of China on one side and global recessionary expectations on the other. The positive China sentiment also gave the rand some support, with all emerging market currencies having had a good day against the dollar. As we've come to learn in the market, news of worsening load shedding doesn't seem to affect the rand.

After staying out of the headlines for a couple of months (other than perhaps for load shedding), the rand was thrust into the spotlight by Phala Phala. Chaos ensued.
