Message from the CEO – *Be curious* |

These were the words I heard from Bruce Vivian, Head of Education at IFAC at the SAIGA's conference last month. While this resonated with me on a number of levels, the context of “being curious” in this instance was about professional accountants and their commitment to lifelong learning.
As a professional accountant, I began my journey in the public sector about 20 years ago - out of curiosity. It was something new, something different, something I didn’t know a lot about – but I felt up for a challenge and believed I could make a difference. I also knew that – to be successful and have an impact– I would need to learn something new every day.
While we in theory only “set” the accounting standards at the ASB, our success depends on professional accountants being employed in the public sector, and them having the requisite knowledge and competencies to apply our Standards. This means we rely on the curiosity of professional accountants to take a chance and work in the public sector and be committed to learn new laws, new governance arrangements, and new accounting standards.
To aid public sector accountants on their journey of *curiosity*, we have a treasure trove of information for you on our website, social media, and our YouTube Channel. We publish regular, topical content on YouTube about the Standards of GRAP, how they should be applied, and how they should be used. Access our You Tube Channel here.
I hope that we can convince more professionals to join the public sector, and join us on our mission to *be curious* [and read a Standard or watch a video] every day.
Stay curious🤔 |
