While Canberrans welcomed news that the week long closure of garbage tips was over, they have been warned not to get too excited as the after effects of the strike would linger for a while longer. Tip gates remained locked with mountains of rubbish dumped outside the entrances from members of the public desperate to be rid of their rubble. Operators were not expected to return to work over the Australia Day long weekend and the huge mounds of rubbish could not be moved without specialised machinery and operators.
