The filmmakers bring Rowe’s unique vision to life through a mix of traditional documentary techniques, intricate sets that recreate Rowe’s Playhouse, animations, and scripted scenes based on Nellie Mae Rowe quotes. Narrated by Emmy-award winner, Uzo Aduba, with voice support by Broadway actress Amy Warren, this film considers the cultural and political forces that shaped Rowe’s life and art. This is an in-person event. There is no virtual component and it will not be recorded.

Final Days to Experience We Are Made of Stories: Self-Taught Artists in the Robson Family Collection
Closes March 26

Plan your visit for the final week of the exhibition We Are Made of Stories: Self-Taught Artists in the Robson Family Collection, which traces the rise of self-taught artists in the 20th century and examines how, despite wide-ranging societal, racial, and gender-based obstacles, their creativity and bold self-definition became major forces in American art.

Highlighting forty-three game-changing artists including James Castle, Thornton Dial Sr., Howard Finster, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Nellie Mae Rowe, and Bill Traylor, among others, We Are Made of Stories gives insight into their powerful personal journeys. Showcasing artwork acquired by Margaret Z. and Douglas O. Robson, this family collection reflects their belief that stories from these artists offer a truer, more complete portrait of our nation's makers.
